Things overheard..

This is a few of the little gems I overheard today when I treated myself to MUCH needed haircut and highlights, Which I LOVE!! I had never been to this salon before so I just sat back and enjoyed all the wisdom.....

1*"I'm sorry but you are not black"
(talking about Pres. Obama and her cousin who is bi-racial)
2* "You are not black!" "you were raised by white parents , lived a white life, you are not black!" (speaking of her black cousin who was adopted by a white family, now getting a break on college costs due to be....hmmmm.black)
3*"why do indians get everything for free? You are not an indian...do you live in a tee-pee? No? then you arent an indian !" The folks with indian heritage might not agree...(again irked over free college)
4*President Obama is the first bi-racial president NOT the first black President! (I do agree with this)But not this-
"Funny how he had no black friends and pretended to be white until he ran for President" (hmmm...HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN ARE BLACK!)
5*How do we even know they are poor? Maybe the mexican government just shows all these little small mexican indians to the world so they can get money for them" (ok. those "little small mexican indians are either aztec or mayan...mayan indian being my daughters heritage and they are truly THAT POOR)
6* "you know mexico treats the indians like the bottom of the pile ,they probably get free college too!" ( I DOUBT IT)
and the last bit of wisdom over heard in a beauty salon...
7* "all gay people have been abused as kids and this makes them feel better"
AHHHHH!!!

I have no problem saying what I believe , but honestly this was so entertaining to just listen to these 3 women ramble on and on , I didnt say a word. I wanted to pull out pictures of my beautiful black Ethiopian daughter (who CLEARLY will not be black since she is raised by white parents..yup. good to know ;P ) and my beautiful Mayan Princesa but didnt think they deserved it :)

****HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO MY FELLOW FLORIDA FRIENDS THE BOYCE FAMILY FOR THE REFERRAL OF THEIR BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER TODAY!!!!***

~We are off for a quick camping trip. Enjoy your week :) Be back sunday :)

ahhhh... gotta love those 'pearls o' wisdom" that can only be picked up overheard at a beauty salon! ;) that sounds exactly like experiences i have had at the place i go for pedis - thankfully, my girl (who i have been going to for 6 years now!) & i are of similar wavelengths (brain, not hair) & we will just make sly "oh really?" eye glances at each other when catching those 'interesting' nuggets o' knowledge from other clients & even other nail techs - never ceases to amaze me how, in 2009, some people still have no concept of others... hope you look all glam now for your camping trip :) {{hugs}}

I'm amazed that you sat there so full of grace. I don't think I would of been able to keep my mouth shut!

What is it about beauty salons that brings out the ignorance in people?

Mouth gaping open at the pure ignorance of those women, and then laughter at how ridiculous it all was. Good for you for not showing them pics of your gorgeous children...they definitely didn't deserve that.

Thanks for the shout out! We are walking on air!

I also hear the most interesting stuff at the beauty shop--the gossip, relationship advice and political discussions are especially entertaining! I just sit there quietly and take it all in.

Could be really offensive if it wasn't so funny and ridiculous! Some people are completely clueless! It must have been so hard not to say anything!

I don't know how you were able to stand it. Wow. The things people say (and, therefore, must actually believe)

Hys.Terical.

Sometimes, it's just not worth it to say anything! Plus you would have missed out on the comedy. :)

As the mother of both caucasian bio children and children adopted of different race, I believe that all my children will have equal opportunities in the USA. However, I believe children born in poverty have less opportunities than those born into a loving, financially stable family. A child, of any race, living in a financially stable family in the USA---has opportunities---and they are probably better than those in a family who struggles financially and/or is not supportive. I am sure it seems difficult to hear but the current pres had so many opportunities presented to him due to the family he was born into; he did not have a family history with ties to slavery in the US, which is what many AA still struggle from---which is their history here in the US. To not acknowledge that is a problem. The president does not have that history; children adopted internationally do not have that history. There is a difference. It is important not to victimize our children just because they are of a different race than our biological family members. They are equal in our eyes; capable in our eyes. No preferential treatment needed. That may have been the point they were trying to make---lost because of the emotional aspect---or taking it too personally.

"...Once our eyes are opened, we can't pretend we don't know what to do. God who weighs our hearts and keeps our souls knows that we know, and holds us responsible to ACT..." Proverbs 24:12

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." James 1:27
"You must be the change you wish to see in the world." -(Mahatma Gandhi)
